Denman students' work : page 3
Rosalie brought an intriguing collection of textiles with her to show the group. This design is based on the embroidery on a dark blue silk Chinese robe. Her treatment of the shading on individual sections, especially the "roundel" at the centre of the scarf, was very skilfully done.
Fay's meticulous style and good observation, which had shown itself in her sketches and her sample piece, came to the fore in this scarf inspired by cyclamen growing in the grounds at Denman College. Fay drew the leaf and plant shapes with gutta onto white and then dyed them before choosing a background colour.
Rosalie based this vibrant scarf on fruit. Her method of dividing up the background into separately coloured sections works very well.
Sylvia worked this piece in wax and dye in layers. I think the white"stalks" work very effectivelyand hold the looseness of the flowers together well. The use of a darker toned green as a border is also a key element in the design's success.
