Course at Denman College, Marcham, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, January 2005

These images are from a course I tutored at Denman College from January 24th- 27th 2005.

We were a very small group of 4 students; a great luxury in terms of time and space. Two were previous students of mine at Denman and two were new to me but not to silk-painting.

On the following pages are examples of the work they produced. All students were initially invited to consider some basics of design, and also how ideas might be sourced from our surroundings. All students produced experimental samples on habotai, either to practise some new technique or prepare for their finished scarves.

I also taught a simple but effective method to make a twist-tied scarf, dyed with brushes or pipettes. Dental tape was used to bind the twisted scarf before dyeing.

Fay's delicate twist-dyed scarf was exquisitely patterned and coloured (above).

The photo below doesn't do justice to the subtle changes in the blues, purple and pink that Rosalie used on the scarf below. At least, I think this scarf was Rosalie's - I've found it hard to name the makers of this particular set of work some weeks after the event!! My apologies if I have the maker wrong.
